Empathy Action’s
Desperate Journeys & The Poverty Trap immersive workshops

2nd-20th October, 2023

Joining Instructions for participants

PRE ARRIVAL

  • This is an immersive & experiential event that features loud noises, drama and theatrics within the experience. You will be standing, sitting and walking through it. There are some cramped spaces designed to be part of the experience. No harm will come to the participants.

  • The immersive workshops handle serious global issues of poverty and displacement. These may be triggering for sensitive individuals or persons with lived experience. We ask that you make known to our team any people within your parties who you feel may find the experience challenging.

  • If you have any concerns about accessibility please contact us to let us know your needs.

  • We ask that there is no photography during the activity. However, if you want some for internal news then please inform us and we can advise when are the best times/places to capture the group. There will also be time at the end to take some photos

  • If you have been asked to group your students (specifically for The Poverty Trap), you will be asked to help split the group down upon entry to the activity following an introduction

ARRIVAL

  • There is parking available in the yard out the front of the warehouse.

  • Please arrive promptly for the start time. Show times will start approximately 5 minutes after the start time

  • Due to the highly experiential and participatory nature of the workshops late comers may not be admitted.

  • There will be a space dedicated to the storage of bags.

Other

  • We will be selling gifts from the Empathy Store at the end of the activities.

ADDITIONAL For Group Leaders:

“What can the participants do next within your group?”

Please could one member of the staff party be prepared to answer this question that one of our team will ask them during the debrief of the activity?

“What can the students do next following their experience?” - we’re particularly looking to spotlight any opportunities that are afforded to the students to dig deeper within their school or their group community.

We will be offering a ‘general’ menu of what to do next and offer a few ways to help through the work of raising cultures of empathy but we believe the students will benefit from a specific menu that is more ‘local’ to them -ie something that is being promoted by the school or group (ie it also serves to answer the question why are you bringing us here) - with a particular focus on poverty alleviation or sanctuary seeking support.

Could you flag who these spokespeople are and we are happy to correspond with them directly on this matter. We anticipate this will only last a minute or two.

This event is made possible with help… and we want to call out and thank the 3 groups that have underpinned these events:

  • Our Empathy Angels (a small, but growing, group of people who believe in the transformation we wish to see through crafting cultures of empathy)

  • A team of 15 year old Duke of Edinburgh students and their friends who have helped make this programme be accessible to local groups. More here
